About J Miller Handcrafted Furniture
J Miller Handcrafted Furniture operates from a converted post office building in Chicago, Illinois. A former classical musician, Miller began his career crafting furniture that has since been exhibited in galleries nationwide. The shop produces handcrafted furniture using a range of woodworking equipment, including two table saws, two jointer/planers, two bandsaws, a drill press, stroke and edge sanders, two lathes, and seven workbenches. The facility also maintains an extensive collection of hand and power tools for joinery and detail work. No headcount or annual volume figures are disclosed. Miller’s furniture has been shown in galleries and shows across the country and has won numerous awards. His pieces are held in the Decorative Arts Collection of the Chicago History Museum. The company distinguishes itself through Miller’s dual role as a practicing craftsman and an educator; his published books and instructional videos on chairmaking, beds, and children’s furniture reflect a commitment to advancing woodworking technique. This expertise informs the design and construction of each piece.
