About Richard Bissell Fine Woodworking
Richard Bissell Fine Woodworking, Inc. operates a small woodworking shop in Putney, Vermont. Founded in 1982 by Richard Bissell, the business began as a one-person operation designing and building handmade furniture piece by piece. Over four decades it has grown into a direct-to-consumer maker of Shaker, Mission, and Windsor-style furniture, with a showroom on site. The shop produces beds, tables, case pieces, seating, desks, and custom built-ins using solid hardwoods and traditional joinery. Each piece is handmade in the Vermont workshop, with construction details covering bed, chair, table, and drawer assembly. Furniture is sold directly to residential customers through the website and the Putney showroom, eliminating gallery or retailer markups. The client base consists of individual homeowners seeking heirloom-quality pieces; no wholesale or contract manufacturing is mentioned. Bissell emphasizes thoughtful design, sustainable lumber sourcing, and a lifetime guarantee on all work. The direct-sales model keeps pricing fair, while the workshop’s focus on proportion, clean details, and durable joinery aims to deliver functional beauty at a reasonable value.
