About Sustar Woodworks
Sustar Woodworks was founded in 2012 by Ian Sustar in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Raised in his father's woodworking shop, Sustar developed an early appreciation for the craft before studying engineering and later returning to furniture making. The company operates from a Milwaukee workshop where each piece is designed and built. The shop produces functional furniture that draws on traditional Shaker principles and mid-century modern influence. Every item is built to order from carefully selected North American hardwoods using time-honored joinery and construction techniques. The work is done individually, not in batches, with an emphasis on integrity and longevity. Sustar Woodworks accepts commissions from clients seeking heirloom-quality furniture that aligns with its design language. The founder has stated that traditional methods are employed not for nostalgia but because they allow furniture to be made with integrity and built for a long life. The engineering background informs a commitment to precision and a balance of beauty and utility.
